Government Polytechnic, Bathinda was established by the Government of Punjab through a registered society to provide Technical Education in emerging areas of Engineering and Technology and especially for the development of rural area of Malwa.The foundation stone was laid down by then Chief Minister of Punjab S. Beant Singh on 9th of July, 1983.The first session commenced from August 21, 1995 when 120 students were admitted in three disciplines, namely Computer Science, Mechanical and Production Engineering.
The College intake was increased to 220 in 1996 with addition of the discipline of Chemical Engineering . The discipline of Electronics & Communication Engineering has been added with an additional intake of 40 students .However, from July 1, 1993 the College has been affiliated to the Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial training along with similar other Polytechnic Colleges of the State.
The College is situated on Bibiwala Road, 4 Kilometers away from the city Bus-stand and 7 Kilometers away from the city Railway Station . An area of 150 acres was notified for acquisition by the Punjab Government of which 70 acres is in possession . The College has adequate and well qualified faculty and more are in the process of recruitment . The Laboratories, Computer Centre and Workshops are equipped with best quality equipment . Till to-date, more than Rs. 20 crores has been spent on laying the infrastructure. Adequate number of books and journals have been provided in the College Library.

Main Objective
The main objective of the college is to provide Technical Education at Diploma level,thus preparing technicians of a level comparable to the best in the country keeping in view the need of the industry. Students apart from being prepared for industrial jobs are also trained for self-employment. They are made self sufficient and enterprising so as to be able to understand profitable ventures. Above all a sense of discipline is inculcated in the students making them useful & responsible citizens.
Extra Curricular Activities
Extra curricular activities are given a special emphasis in the institution for an all round development of the students. The students are encouraged to participate in sports and other competitions.
Industry Institute Interaction Cell
The institution has established an Industry Institute Interaction Cell under the World Bank assisted projects to facilitate interaction and co-ordination with industries so as to make technical education relevant to current needs.
